Located
on the west coast of Italy, Livorno is the second largest city of
the Tuscany. The city became a modern industrial centre after was
heavily bombed during World War II. The port today links Tuscany
with Corsica, Sardinia and Isola d'Elba and is also an arrival point
for cruise ships. The city does have a few worthy sights.
The Fortezza Nuova, in the area known as Piccola Venezia because of
its small canals was built for the Medici in the late 16th century.
Close to the waterfront is the city's other fort, the Fortezza
Vecchia, built 60 years on the site of an 11th-century building.
