Rome has two principal airports, Fiumicino airport and Ciampino airport. The first is in the south-west part outside Rome, the second on the south-east. Fiumicino: The official name of the airport of Fiumicino is Leonardo Da Vinci, but you will also find it under "FCO" or "Fiumic.". It is subdivided in two parts, arrivals on the first floor, and departures on the second floor. Founded in 1961, the airport has had increased traffic every year, in 2008 over 35.000.000 passengers took a flight from there. Both parts of the airport are divided in five terminals called: Terminal A, Terminal AA, Terminal B, Terminal C and Terminal 5. Leonardo da Vinci lies about 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Rome's historic city centre, which means approximately 40 minutes by car. There are information desks located in all terminals of all airports as well as 24-hour cash machines (ATMs), Money Exchange counters and first aid facilities. There are also numerous shops, that sell exclusive quality duty free goods, and many restaurants, cafes and bars. The luggage storage facility is on the Arrivals level of International Terminals and is open from 07:00 until 23:00. Storage costs approximately € 2.00 for up to 7 hours, € 3.50 per 24 hours. Large or heavy luggage costs € 6.00 per day. In the event of your baggage being lost, please report immediately to the handling operator indicated on the monitor. Disabled passengers requiring special assistance are advised to notify their airlines beforehand. Ciampino: Ciampino airport is situated 15 km southeast of central Rome and reports also to the name "CIA". It was opened in 1916 and was Rome's main airport until 1960. Between 1960 and 2000 it was used principally as a commercial and military airport, but after that Ciampino airport has seen increased traffic thanks to the low cost companies. Today is traffic is over 5 millions of passengers per year. |
